The Key Club has had an exciting year of service projects! Members Leah Anders, Ariel Oefinger, Kinsley Griffith, Hailey Gerster, Morgan Gammons, Dylan Walter, Garrett Demaree, Allison Detmer, Allison Furnish, Mariah Davis, Leighla Day, Zoe Cole, Calleigh Powell, Rylee Hankins, and sponsoring teacher Michelle Hicks, have partnered with Kyle weaver from the Purdue Extension to bring the Marshall Mentor program to both Switzerland County elementary schools. After training with Mr. Weaver, the students presented lessons on Empathy, Strength, Courage and Perseverance, Kindness and Forgiveness to the elementary students who participated in the program. This was a rewarding experience for all mentors!
Key Club members also partnered with the Switzerland County Department of Child Services to assist children who are removed from their homes and placed in foster care. Students assembled “Bedtime Bags”, which are a canvas bag containing a blanket, stuffed animal, toiletry bag containing a toothbrush, toothpaste and comb, a notebook, pencils, crayons and a coloring book. Many children who are removed from home do not have the opportunity to gather any personal items. The bags are intended to help ease the difficult transition for these children. The supplies needed to assemble the bags were made possible by a generous grant from INSPIRE.
We are looking forward to kicking off another exciting year of service projects this fall! Just this week another INSPIRE grant application for “Baby Bags” was approved! This project will kick off in the fall and will consist of partnering with local agencies to provide bags of baby supplies for new parents in need. Any student interested in joining Key Club for the 2019-2020 school year should contact Mrs. Hicks.
