7th Graders Enjoy an Exciting End to the School Year Studying Indian Culture

From teachers Amanda Cole and Stacy Streett:

7th graders finished off their year reading Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan.  The book is set in India and follows a thirteen-year-old girl who gets married only to find out her sickly husband’s family needed her dowry to take him to Varanasi and the Ganges River in hopes of saving his life.

Students studied Rabindranath Tagore’s poem by the same name as well as Indian Culture.  Makayla Harris did a Genius Hour project choreographing a dance to the song, Yeh Ishq  Hai.  Andrea Kappes cooked cuisine mentioned in the book: Vegetable tikka, dal, raita (cucumber yogurt salad) and mangos.  The meal was paid for by a grant from the Vevay Switzerland County Foundation.  The grant request was written by the students.
