A Garden Renewed
Before After
During the 2010 – 2011 school year Switzerland County Elementary School 5th graders were asked to give the school’s library garden a makeover. The students completed this project during Miss Shellie Fowler’s science class. The students did research about indoor gardens and surveyed the school’s staff and students to find out what would be the best fit for SCES. Once their research was complete the students began working on their designs. There were 18 groups of students competing to have their design chosen. The 5th graders studied each of the completed designs and chose the six that would be presented to school superintendent, Dr. Elizabeth Tharp Jones and Switzerland County School’s grounds keeper, Randy Davis. They selected the two designs that would be voted on by SCES students and staff. All of the students’ designs included a memory stone in honor of Terry Griffith, who used to take care of the garden. The garden is still awaiting the addition of this memory stone. The design created by Riley King, Ashley Peelman, Kelsea Hartsock, and Caitlin Epperson was chosen. The renewed garden was recently finished and is once again a beautiful focal point of Switzerland County Elementary School. Special thanks go to Dr. Jones, Principal Mike Jones, Randy Davis, Teresa Theetge, Louie Peelman, Dawn Powell, Greg Curlin, Janet Splain, and Neil Haskell for all of their efforts in making this happen.
